With reference to my Despatch

No. 210 of the 21st. ultimo, I have the honour to trans-

-mit the enclosed advanoe copies of a resumé prepared at my

request by the Assistant Colonial Secretary of correspond-

-ence concerning the various attempts made by the Provinci-

-al Authorities to impose at Canton additional taxation on

Foreign Opium. I shall forward copies of the Memorandum

when completed.

I regret to have to add that the

protests made by His Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires at Peking

and by His Majesty's Consul-General at Canton against the

additional taxation which is being now levied have so far

produced no result. In the interest of the trade and of

Merchants in this Colony engaged in it I trust that efforts

for
